Hello!👋 Here I am again, with another review, this time about the chosen movie, Perfect Blue! 💙
When I watched this film, it was a Sunday, and my boyfriend and I were on the couch🛋. I was expecting a movie in the style of Makoto Shinkai (director of Your Name, Weathering with You, etc.), which is to say, soft☁️ and emotionally resonant (because all the anime movies I've seen have been like that), and I find myself facing a completely different scenario😨.
So, to understand the context of the movie at a deeper level, we should know that it's a 🇯🇵Japanese animation from the 1990s, a period in which 🍬pop culture and the media were undergoing significant changes🔄. The film was released in 1997 and directed by Satoshi Kon, who later became a renowned figure in the world of animation🎞🎥. Some of his other notable works include Paprika (2006) and Millennium Actress (2001).
Okay, knowing that, what's the plot of this movie?🧐
Perfect Blue is a film that stands out for its profound exploration of identity, reality, and obsession. The movie follows Mima👧, a young pop singer🎤 who decides to leave her music career behind to pursue her dream of becoming an actress🎭. However, her transition to the world of acting becomes a terrifying and disorienting experience❌.
(All the posters of the movie are incredibles, btw!)❤️
The plot revolves around the perception of reality and fiction, as the line between real life, fantasy, and psychosis no begins to blur for both Mima and the viewer🫵. The film delves into the dark aspects of fame and obsession, showing how external pressure and expectations can affect someone's mental health😣.
The narrative is skillfully crafted to keep the audience in a constant state of uncertainty and confusion, ❓questioning what is real and what is imaginary. Specifically, when Mima decides to become an actress, it becomes difficult for me to discern what is reality and what is fiction within the fiction (Mima's acting)📺 because they take you so far that objectively differentiating reality becomes impossible. Kon's direction uses visual👀 elements and symbolism to create a haunting atmosphere, while the music reinforces the sense of emotional dissonance.
"Perfect Blue" also addresses issues such as the 👭duality of identity, the loss of innocence, perversion, and the exploration of the darkest parts of the human psyche🧠. Through unexpected twists and psychologically intense moments, the film manages to immerse the viewer in an experience that encourages reflection on individual perceptions of reality🤯.
I think that "Perfect Blue" is a striking movie that combines elements of suspense, psychology, and mystery to explore the complexities of the human mind and the search for identity in a world obsessed with fame and image📸. With its intriguing narrative and focus on character psychology, the film has become an animation classic that remains relevant in its exploration of deep and disturbing themes🫢.
Without a doubt, it's a movie with many metaphors and content that's widely discussable in the field of psychology. I recommend watching a follow-up analysis to help untangle the confusion you might have in your head, haha.
⚠️Warning: If you're a sensitive person like me, haha, I suggest watching it with care because, despite being an animation, there are scenes or situations that can make you extremely uncomfortable. I also recommend watching it with someone else as the movie's debate becomes even more intriguing!
